The match was played on an overcast day with veers and strong winds. Both sides tested each other early on with little success, but the Rebels gradually got on top as the first-half wore on.
After eleven minutes a Paul Maxwell cross from the left flank was floated into the visitors box for Mark Foran, who headed down well, but the 'keeper was equal to it. Moments later Les Briley let fly, but again the Rovers keeper blocked. Both sides were playing good football as they searched for the initial breakthrough.
Slough had a series of threatening free-kicks on the a visitors' 18-yard box, but were unable to capitalise. Good work by Scott, Sayer and Briley saw Darren Anderson get his header in, but again the keeper was equal to it.
The visitors first clear-cut opportunity came after 35 minutes. Shilvock beat Whitby and his cross beat Bunting but fortunately Mark Foran was on hand to clear the ball from the Rebels goalmouth.
Thereafter headers from both Sayer and Anderson were pushed wide by the visitors 'keeper. Moments before the break Bromsgrove looked to have broken the deadline when a Whitehouse header had Bunting beaten, but his effort was blocked by Foran and Hazel cleared for a corner.
Turning around goal-less, Bromsgrove took a shock lead two minutes after the restart. A right-wing cross found a diving Gray who headed home from six yards past Bunting.
Slough could have pulled minutes later when Andy Sayer only had the Bromsgrove keeper to beat, but his drive was well blocked.
After 63 minutes Darren Anderson slipped while covering Whitehouse on the edge of the 18-yard box and the Bromsgrove forward released Gray who drove the ball past Bunting to make it 2-0.
Slough continued to push forward with an excellent Foran header, from a Briley cross, blocked rather fortunately by a defender's face with an open goal beckoning.
But Rovers moved further ahead and effectively secured the points after 73 minutes. Foran slipped in possession and Whitehouse broke from 30 yards before driving his low shot past the advancing Bunting.
Slough continued to push forward and were finally rewarded with a couple of minutes remaining. A goalmouth scramble saw crosses from both Briley and Pluckrose before Andy Sayer's diving header reduced the arrears.
