On a dry, clear evening and a very good playing surface, Slough fielded several new players, namely nineteen-year old Darren Hancock at right back; Paul Maxwell, also nineteen, in a central defensive role and sixteen-year old Ben Hudson, who was included as a substitute, but was not used. Making his debut Darren Hancock had a tremendous game.
In front of over 1,300, both sides tested each other early on and we fell behind after seven minutes. A rare mistake from Mark Foran saw his clearance remain in the Slough 18-yard box. Trevor Bunting tried to cover, but the ball fell to Yeovil's Spencer who scored from three or four yards.
We fell further behind after 21 minutes. Again a poor clearance put us under pressure. The ball found its way to the edge of our penalty area, but Yeovil's Sanderson was first to it and his low drive flew past the diving Trevor Bunting to leave us trailing 2-0. But the West Country side were not having it their own way. Chances fell to both Andy Sayer and Allan Pluckrose, but a combination of good goal-keeping and wayward shooting prevented us from reducing the arrears.
Two goal down at the break, we then proceeded to dominate the second-half, with the home side restricted to just a couple of hopeful attacks. However, we found the majority of our pressure frustrated by an apparently over-eager linesmen who seemed to flag for offside whenever we moved forward. Our best opportunity came on the hour. Following a series of corners and fine work by Darren Hancock, Andy Sayer and Mark Quamina, Allan Pluckrose headed home from three yards, but that linesman's flag was raised and the goal was disallowed.
So the match moves into its second leg next Tuesday with Yeovil having a two goal lead.
