Slough Town's revival came to a sad end at Wexham Park on Tuesday when, for the second successive season Wokingham collected three points in the final minutes of an Isthmian League match at Slough.
For the Wokingham club this continued a wonderful run that has seen them climb from the bottom of the table collecting 25 points out of a possible 27 in their last nine matches and bringing them into the fringe of the Championship race.
It would be pleasant to say that this was a pulsating struggle for those vital points, but in fact the two sides produced a pallid, formless display that threatened to put the spectators to sleep long before the final whistle.
For Slough only Dylan Evans and Stuart Walton could feel satisfied with their performances, although Peter Skerritt and Joe Moloney worked hard in the centre of the defence to keep the Wokingham forwards quiet.
Throughout the game the Rebels as a striking force really did not exist. Rowan Dodds trying hard received minimal support, not the best preparation for tomorrow's important match with Dulwich Hamlet.
Early in the match Steve Norman drove a long shot just wide of the posts and later Gary Attrell hooked the ball over Doug Hatcher's head only to see a defender clear off the line.
These two attempts comprised the total of Slough's assaults on the Wokingham goal, meanwhile with little being created by the visitors attack Stuart Walton had hardly to worry as Wokingham failed to make a worthwhile opening.
With the match scoreless at the interval it was hoped that the second half would burst into life, but the match continued on in a featureless sort of way, with Wokingham with their superior skills gradually taking the initiative. Midway through the second period Alexander shot just wide and shortly after this Steve Norman gave way to Ian Parsons, a substitution that didn't really alter the picture.
Robert Purser gave Walton a difficult time from a free kick which the young 'keeper turned just over the bar, and then Dylan Evans collecting a loose ball from a corner shot just over the visitors bar.
Slough enjoyed a reprieve when Moloney gave the ball away to Jimmy Brown, but the Wokingham centre forward made a mess of his chance with only Walton to beat.
With the match nearing the end Ian Parsons underhit a shot which caused no trouble to Hatcher, and with four minutes remaining came the winner.
Francis Araguez nudged Sweetzer off the ball when no danger threatened and from the resulting free kick from Bobby Purser, Sean Price jumped high to head beyond the despairing arms of Walton.
This was a silly goal to give away at his stage in the game, although it brought victory to the better side.
