B&B Senior Cup
Attendance: 304
It took Slough Town 70 minutes to break into a sweat at Wexham Park on Tuesday evening and by that time they were out of the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup.
They gave a spirited Chalfont side a two-goal head start and it was not until the closing stages of the game that the Rebels showed brief glimpses of their supposed superiority in this second round tie.
Once again Slough turned in a thoroughly lifeless performance against inferior opposition in the county cup and on this occasion they were made to pay for it by their plucky Athenian League opponents.
Playing aimless football with no shape or pattern to it the Rebels were soon struggling and it was Chalfont who dominated the early stages with some enterprising fast attacking play.
After Mick Doherty had missed a glorious chance Chalfont went ahead after 45 minutes when Steve Mowle's powerful shot was pushed away by Frank Parsons and Andy Ryan netted the rebound.
This did little to stir Slough on a bitterly cold night and 24 minutes into the second half Chalfont further shocked their more illustrious rivals.
Parsons mishandled a corner from Ryan and Alan Boucher jubilantly slammed the loose ball high into the net.
At long last Slough increased the tempo and with his first touch of the ball substitute Tony Gibson presented Mick Doherty with his 14th goal of the season, as 'keeper Vince Mazurek failed to hold the former's well struck shot.
Although still looking far from confident of their own ability Slough mounted a barrage of attacks on the Chalfont goal. In one incident three times the ball was frantically cleared off the Chalfont line as both Rowan Dodds and Dylan Evans fought desperately to force it home.
Evans saw a fine effort strike the crossbar and in injury time Mick Doherty was twice foiled by Mazurek, when an equaliser looked a near certainty.
So for the third successive season the Rebels have been bundled out of the county cup by another side they are more than capable of beating. The faithful Slough supporters who braved the Arctic conditions to watch their side certainly deserved better reward than the lack-lustre display the Rebels produced, but all credit to Chalfont for what was for them a historic win.
