The result of this match must have raised a few eyebrows, especially since Sutton had defeated Wycombe Wanderers by the only goal at Loakes Park on the previous Tuesday.

In reality it was one of Slough Town's best performances in a long time, scoring six goals from ten chances, a complete reversal of their wasted opportunities of the previous Saturday against Barking.

The odd thing about this match was that Sutton had slightly more of the play, and had twice as many corners than Slough. The result of their pressure was a clean sheet for Frank Parsons who won the "Man of the Match" award from the supporters despite the fact that Gary Attrell scored a hat-trick.

Slough got off to a good start when Gary Attrell opened the scoring after 10 minutes, and then they could have increased their lead when Dave Collyer, running out from goal, missed his kick completely, but no Slough player was within reach to place the finishing touch.

Midway through the first half Rowan Dodds increased the Rebels lead with a superb solo effort and shortly before half-time Gary Attrell neatly slipped the ball past Collyer from an acute angle.

During the opening period in the second half Sutton took the game to Slough, but staunch defence with Parsons in the rearguard kept the league top scorers under control.

A well-taken free-kick by Vaughan Powell that was volleyed home by Dylan Evans gave Slough a 4-0 lead and put an end to Sutton's hopes of pulling back the deficit, and another fine move by Slough set Attrell up with a chance that he took with all the aplomb of a seasoned player.

Seven minutes from the end a speculative long shot from Keith White beat the now demoralised Collyer, and a brilliant save from the Sutton goalkeeper just kept out a well-placed chip from Attrell that could well have found the net.

The Sutton team left the field shaking their heads in disbelief having suffered possibly their heaviest defeat since Leeds United knocked them out of the FA Cup many years ago.
