Slough Town's young striker Gary Attrell is fast gaining a reputation for scoring vital goals at the right time.
He did it against Millwall, and on Saturday he again came to the Rebels rescue in this top-of-the-table clash at Loakes Park.
With little more than five minutes left Slough looked to be heading for defeat against their great Servowarm Isthmian League, Premier Division rivals, but then Attrell, with more than a little help from Wycombe goalkeeper Gary Lester, salvaged a point for the Rebels just when all seemed lost for Terry Reardon's side.
As far as Wycombe were concerned this was a cruel blow because apart from the first 20 minutes they had always looked the better side to win this crucial match. However, they found Rebel's goalkeeper Kevin Mitchell in quite brilliant form and also as in the past against Slough failed to make the most of their overall domination and in the end paid the price expensively.
Slough-Wycombe clashes are always pulsating affairs and this latest confrontation was no exception. Wanderers, who started the day 12 points clear of Slough at the top although the Rebels had seven matches in hand, almost scored in the first 40 seconds, but Steve Long shot wide when well placed.
However, Slough quickly hit back and the industrious Vaughan Powell saw a scorching 20 yard effort beat Lester, only to hit the post and bounce back across the face of the goal.
Mitchell then masterfully tipped a Bobby Dell effort over the bar, before on 33 minutes the Rebels' goalkeeper produced a stupendous save from Jimmy Jacobs. From the word go Jacobs' shot looked a goal all the way, but Mitchell threw himself to his right and somehow acrobatically plucked the ball out of the air to foil the lively Wycombe midfield dynamo.
Minutes later Mitchell again came to Slough's rescue as he bravely foiled Glynn. However, in the resultant collision both players were badly injured, and Glynn took little further part in the match and Mitchell was left hobbling on one foot for the remainder of the game.
Wycombe continued to pressure Slough with their now familiar brand of quick decisive football after the break, and on 56 minutes it looked as though the deadlock had finally been broken in this stirring encounter. But with Mitchell well and truly beaten Jacobs' shot struck the post and bounced straight back into the arms of the more than grateful Slough goalkeeper.
However, if Wycombe were rueing Slough's luck their pressure was finally rewarded after 68 minutes. Although there appeared little danger, Joe Moloney deliberately handled a high ball on the edge of the Slough penalty area- which resulted in a booking for the defender.
And, from the free-kick Dell struck a sweet shot into the corner of the net, for once giving Mitchell no chance to continue his string of fine saves.
Slough's hopes of salvaging the match now looked remote, but they persisted and five minutes from time their efforts were rewarded. It was really a goal out of nothing. Attrell broke on the left and sent over an intended cross which totally deceived Lester, and the Wycombe goalkeeper could only parry the ball into the net at his near post.
