The boots have been untied, and the footballs put away in the cupboards at Wexham Park with the loyal supporters breathing sighs of relief that the season has ended.

Rarely could a season have ended so badly for Slough Town. With just four matches remaining the Rebels could still have taken a leading position in the Berger Isthmian League, Premier Division table, but they then slumped to four successive defeats and in the process conceded 11 goals, scored but one, and dropped disastrously down the table to finish in eighth spot.

During Saturday's match have never won a league at Sandy Lane, where Slough match, the Rebels produced one paced monotonous football that created little, while some sloppy defensive play gave poor Bob Randall little cover in goal.

Why Slough should play so badly is something of a mystery and a problem that will no doubt occupy Terry Reardon's thoughts in the months that lie ahead.

Certainly on their current form the Rebels would have great difficulty in keeping but at the same time Slough their Premier Division status, have brought off some not so able successes this season and clearly there are some excellent players on the club’s books.

It was a lively and confident performance from Tooting striker Dave Busby that helped send the Rebels to another defeat, as he proved a constant threat to the Slough defence and netted two excellent goals.

Quite clearly Slough have not, at present, such a striker within their ranks, and only a well taken header by Rowan Dodds in the 39th minute spelt any danger to the Tooting defence.

During the first half Slough looked equal to an in-form Tooting side as they endevaoured to play football in the swirling wind. But as the match progressed, Tooting began to take charge, and after 60 minutes Dave Russell was replaced by Roy Butler.

Within five minutes a quick attack down the left flank set up Paul Currie to head past Randall, and then five minutes later a similar move saw Busby repeat the dose.

Slough tried hard to create something but their attacks never really caused Tooting any concern, and by contrast Busby with two minutes remaining, left a trail of Slough defenders stationary and with a blistering solo effort beat Randall.

This left a sorry and dejected Slough side well endeavoured to play football brought the season to an end.
