A goal by Eggie James 13 minutes from the end of a tense match gave Slough the Berger Isthmian league championship at Sutton.

With the game drifting into obscurity Sutton took the lead with 19 minutes left and the match erupted into a mass of excitement. The first half passed almost without incident as Slough, without Barry Friend, lacked the width that he had provided over the last four matches.

When half time arrived without a score the Enfield contingent who had come to watch the match were jubilant and early in the second half there was no obvious difference in the pattern of play.

Slough, looking desperately for victory, brought on Eggie James for John Beyer who had bravely struggled on with an injury and in doing so Churchill gambled on victory.

Within minutes however Slough suffered a blow that would have been a knockout for lesser sides. With 19 minutes remaining Sutton stunned them when Larry Pritchard hit a tremendous shot past Teale to give Sutton the lead and set the Rebels the almost impossible task of scoring twice to take the title.

Nevertheless Slough pressed forward. James was clearly causing consternation in the home ranks and within four minutes Slough had incredibly equalised.

A corner on the left from Pat Morrissey was headed on by Eggie James and Micky Kiely flicked the ball into the net past the stranded goalkeeper. Slough now showed themselves hell bent on winning and, playing their best football of the night, made the Sutton defence look leaden footed.

Within another three minutes the impossible was achieved. Another corner from Morrissey on the left swirled in at the far post and Eggie James nudged it over the line amidst tremendous excitement.

As the referee blew for time the pitch was engulfed by several hundred Slough supporters to celebrate a famous victory and a glorious championship at the last gasp.
