SLOUGH TOWN'S hopes of getting off to a good start in the Isthmian League received another setback on Tuesday night when they were held to a goalless draw at Church Road.
It was a disappointing performance from the Rebels following Saturday's excitement against Dagenham but they were hardly helped by injuries and an appalling playing surface.
Dave Yerby was unable to play because of a stomach upset while Eggie James aggravated his knee injury before half-time and from then on never looked capable of troubling the Hayes defence.
In addition to those problems, Slough had to play on a pitch with large areas so completely bare of grass that they bore more than a slight resemblance to moon craters!
Nevertheless the Rebels should have done better after creating several chances in the second half. The best of these came in the 55th minute when a James effort was headed off the line by Gordon Towers and Dave Russell's snap shot was also blocked.
Russell was Slough's most dangerous striker on the night and he twice forced fine saves from goalkeeper Paul Priddy in a dismal first 45 minutes.
The same player set up an excellent opportunity in the last minute but the unhappy James headed his cross wide.
