SLOUGH did just enough to take the points in their derby clash with neighbours Hayes at Church Road on Saturday. But even the reappearance of former Hayes players Vic Akers and Pat Morrissey, who both joined Slough from Hayes three weeks ago, failed to liven up the proceedings in a typical end-of-season affair.
Slough always had more ideas than an inexperienced Hayes side though - particularly up front, where they were far more positive. And it was only from set pieces that any real pressure was put on keeper Richard Teale. A desperate save from Frank Ellis prevented Pat Morrissey from celebrating his return to Church Road with a goal in the very first minute as the striker took advantage of some slack marking.
A great defence splitting ball from Mick Kiely put John Beyer through but the final shot was off target, while the best Hayes could offer was a lob from Steve George that posed no problems for Teale.
A typical piece of Morrissey skill helped Slough take a deserved 21st minute lead. The former Hayes man flicked on a Beyer free kick into the path of Mick Kiely, and although Ellis managed to get a hand to the header, he could not prevent a goal.
Kiely cleared a Peter Gaydon header off his own line soon after, and Teale made a great save when Terry Boyle hammered the loose ball goalwards. Eric Young was just off target with a header and Ellis made a good 52nd minute save from Kiely after some useful work from Dave Russell.
Hayes replied with a 20 yard shot from Micky Scott and another long range effort from Mark Harrison that bounced awkwardly for Teale. Generally though, chances were few and far between and the game became a non event as it progressed.
The game sparked into life just before the end though when Ellis saved well from Morrissey, Vic Akers shot high over after Dave Russell had teed up a good chance, and it was Ellis who came to the rescue again three minutes from time when he brilliantly turned over a powerful Russell drive.
