IT WAS a day of sensations at Wexham Park on Saturday, but they had little to do with football.

Slough were meeting Carshalton in a bottom of the table battle for the second time in the space of four days. Feelings ran very high in the previous Tuesday's game at Carshalton, and on Saturday the feud was continued.

Carshalton had three players sent off and two booked in a very bad tempered encounter and the Surrey club face an enquiry by the Berger Isthmian League. What little good football there was came from Slough but they only just got home by the odd goal even with their opponents finally reduced to eight men. However this result really dispels any lingering relegation fears the Rebels may have held.

So poor was the fare served up that many spectators had left the ground before Rebels got the winning goal against the depleted opposition.

Nothing very startling happened in the opening quarter of the game but after 22 minutes the visitors went into the lead when from a corner Allen shot under the diving Teale. Yerby cleared the ball but the referee decided the ball had crossed the line before the clearance.

Slough were quick to equalise when a perfectly taken corner from Friend was headed into the net by Kiely. Within a minute Maurice, the visitor's right back, kicked Kiely's legs from under him - right under the referee's nose - and the official immediately pulled out the red card and the Carshalton man was on his way to the dressing room.

Things were boiling up in an ugly way and within a minute Coombs punched Kiely and the linesman flagged as the crowd roared their disapproval. After further argument Coombs had joined Maurice in the dressing room. Carshalton players demonstrated against the linesman until the half time whistle cooled matters down.

Carshalton resumed to the jeers of the crowd but their nine men defended desperately and a bewildered and frustrated Slough failed to find a way through. John Beyer was replaced by Roger Mackay.

It was nine minutes from the end before Rebels found a way to score and then Feely beat Finch from close range.

After this goal there was more trouble. Davies, the former Cowdenbeath, Scottish League player recently signed by Carshalton, was booked for a foul and then Kember was shown the yellow card for a foul. When he refused to give his correct name the referee sent him off.

The Carshalton display was a disgrace to football and it is to be hoped the authorities take a strong line of action. The referee, Mr A. Ward, had a difficult time and had he not tried to keep tight control goodness knows what the outcome would have been.
