B&B Senior Cup
Barry Friend
SLOUGH progressed to the semi-finals of the Berks Bucks Senior Cup yet again, after this rather scrappy match at Wexham Park on Saturday which Slough won by a penalty goal well taken by Barry Friend on the hour.
In many ways the match was similar to the previous encounter between these two sides in the Hitachi Cup this season with Chesham dominating for the first half hour and the game swinging to Slough with greater emphasis as time went on.
Unfortunately there will be too many memories of the total inadequacies of the match officials rather than the football that was played. They seemed to be quite out of their depth for much of the time and appeared to be devising alternative entertainment of their own and, when a linesman's flag was raised for offside when Dave Russell passed back to Richard Teale, it literally brought the house down.
Slough had a good chance to take an early lead in the 6th minute when Paul Lee put Mickey Kiely through but Barber saved brilliantly. This was Slough's only early threat as Chesham took up the running and Maguire tried an overhead kick that Teale stopped at full stretch.
Almost immediately from the clearance Maguire forced Teale into another fine save and then Tim Smith was just off target with a tremendous shot.
Peter Feely then saw a good effort stopped on the line and then just before the interval Maguire broke through but shot carelessly over the bar as Teale came off his line.
The change of ends brought Slough out of their shell and in the first minute after the restart Feely, after controlling Russell's centre on his chest, shot inches past the post.
As Chesham began to wilt, Slough gained the ascendency but play became rather scrappy as several odd refereeing decisions began to play on the nerves of the layers.
Slough scored the vital goal in the 61st minute when Friend dribbled past two defenders but was dumped on his face in the penalty area. Friend took the kick himself almost too perfectly as it entered the net off the angle of the post and cross bar, Barber having no chance.
