A PENALTY save by Trevor Porter seven minutes from the end of extra time and a last gasp equaliser by substitute Terry Brown two minutes later prevented feeble Slough slumping to a humiliating defeat in the Berks and Bucks Cup final at Chesham on Monday.
Underdogs Hungerford from the Hellenic League, having held their Isthmian League opponents for 90 goal-less minutes, then cashed in on an error by John Beyer to take the lead.
It seemed they would again humble Slough as they had done in last season's semi-final, but they were robbed of glory by Brown. He provided the effort that so many of his colleagues did not give and it is amazing that he was not brought on as substitute in the 3-0 defeat at Dagenham two days earlier.
No doubt Slough's players will blame a poor Chesham pitch which manager Joe Arpino said was not fit for a cup final, but that is no excuse for Slough's failure to trouble 'keeper Mooney in the first 90 minutes.
Slough, having brought in Bob Underwood and Gordon Bartlett as full-backs Tim Turl ad Mick Cooper were injured, took too long to settle down and a scrappy first-half saw play contained in midfield for long spells.
David Russell made one good run but had his shot blocked, while Paul Lee twice fired off target.
Kieran Somers was again disappointing and was, perhaps, lucky not to be substituted. As it was, the off form Lee was the man to be replaced by Brown in the 66th minute. Brown soon made his presence felt with a shot which Swain managed to clear off the line.
Hungerford, who had beaten much fancied Wycombe in the semi-final, continued to battle away and they grabbed a shock lead with extra-time eight minutes old. Beyer gave the ball away and Sid Webb pounced to find the net.
Poor Beyer then conceded a penalty for 'hands' in the 113th minute. This should have put the match beyond Slough's reach but penalty expert David Ingram had his spot kick saved by Porter.
Two minutes later Slough were level. Russell's corner was helped on by Somers to Brown who turned sharply to hammer a face-saving equaliser past Mooney.
