Slough Town had a last minute team change at Cheshunt, Tim Turl having left the club following a disagreement with Tommy Lawrence, had his place at right back taken by Micky O'Sullivan. Slough won very much easier than the 1-0 score suggests but the victory takes them into second place with games in hand of Harwich. Reid was the Slough scorer in the 66th minute.

Surprisingly Slough played only two players up, Chatterton of course who looked much sharper than of late and Ian Reid who looks better the further up the field he plays.

Perhaps even more surprising was Allan Tottman's role in midfield and Terry Reardon spending most of his time in the back line. Moves like these bring groans of disbelief from Slough's hardy supporters but this time, as in the past, Tommy Lawrence knew exactly what he was doing and the overall unit magnificently marshalled by Roger Day moved at times like clockwork.

The most exciting thing about this Slough line-up at the moment is the old fashioned wing work of Paul Giggle, his runs down the flanks being a joy to watch as he takes the defence on and gets them into a tangle.

Chatterton went close with a header in the 53rd, then he and Giggle combined for a good effort in the 60th, Within a minute Cheshunt made their second strike of the match when Schofield forced Wolstenholme to make a fine save. But in the 66th came the only goal of the match. Chatterton controlled the ball, passed cleverly to Giggle who raced through and crossed for Reid to hammer home.

Apart from Eaton being booked for a foul on Twigg 30 seconds later, the game was as good as over but with Slough getting complacent as 90 minutes elapsed Wolstenholme was forced to bring off a magnificent save from Twigg, pushing the ball over for a corner. From this the home side forced a second but the late rally was just too late and the whistle went with the home side just beginning to realise that a point could possibly have been theirs.
