FA Cup
Neither of these teams on their display at Slough Stadium on Saturday have much chance of disputing the final stages of the qualifying competition of the FA Cup, but Bletchley must have returned to North Bucks wondering how it was that they were still in the competition after 90 minutes of football. Slough had 95 per cent of the play but could not break down a blanket defence with Dennis Wells playing a "blinder."
Bletchley might have stolen a win had they not been refused a definite penalty, but that would have been a blatant travesty of football justice.
As the game wore on Slough became increasingly frustrated but Reardon and Day fortunately remained the complete masters in mid-field and only ex-Northampton forward Barry Lines of the visiting strikers showed any real class.
Slough's first real chance came in the 10th minute when Day with the Bletchley goal at his mercy miskicked, within minutes a Tottman shot was deflected against the bar and Slough settled down to control the play, the visitors just managing the occasional breakaway.
From one of these in the 23rd Tuffs centred from the right and Weeks racing in unmarked hit his shot too hastily and struck the upright, the rebound being easily cleared.
After this Slough pushed forward and it was Wells who kept the scoreline at 0-0 for the interval with a fine display and two wonderful fingertip saves.
After the interval it was all one-way traffic, an O'Sullivan header was cleared off the line in the 49th, a Chatterton shot received the same treatment in the 54th and three line clearances from Tottman came in the 57/58th minutes. And so the pressure continued, Slough gained corner after corner but could not get the all-important goal.
In the 73rd a quick throw by Reardon found Day who beat two men before firing in a fine shot but again Wells was equal to it and managed to turn the ball away for yet another corner.
With Slough shooting in almost at will but without result frustration began to creep in and the visitors began to get more into the game in the final minutes and in the 85th Bannister was brought down just inside the Slough area but referee Chester decided that it was outside the box and Harris's free kick flashed around the "wall" but a fine diving save from the almost unemployed Wolstenholme saved the day.
