Slough Town’s nine game winless run is finally over thanks to three well-worked goals at Hanwell Town, which puts the Rebels into the third round of the Isuzu FA Trophy, writes Henry Cheal.
With so much at stake, goals in both halves for Slough ultimately gave them a comfortable win. However, Hanwell almost had the perfect start as George Nicholas rattled the crossbar with a strike from inside the box inside the first minute.
With not much to report for the next 20 minutes, Slough took the lead thanks to a moment of magic from loanee Arnold Matshazi, who drove at the Hanwell defence and aimed well into the top left corner of the net, giving Josh Strizovic no chance.
Despite the blow of Johnny Goddard coming off injured, it didn’t stop Slough piling on the pressure, and they almost extended their lead thanks to Matshazi again, but this time Hanwell defended well.
Slough came out firing in the second half and had another big chance, with Matshazi and substitute Manny Williams both having attempts on goal, but Strizovic did well to save.
Just before the hour mark Matt Lench received a red card after a quarrel between the two teams, which led to the Rebels being reduced to ten players and Hanwell having coach Sean Kelleher sent to the stands.
Despite the sending off, Slough kept on fighting and then extended their lead on 74 minutes. George Wells squared the ball after some brilliant work down the left hand side and the evergreen Williams was there to sidefoot home into the roof of the net.
In the latter stages of the game, Slough defended well to stop Hanwell from mounting a late comeback, before a Rebels counter in stoppage time provided the visitors with their final goal. Matshazi’s effort was tipped away by Strizovic before Jackman sidefooted the ball home to the delight of the fans behind the goal.
