Slough took a hard-earned point as the Rebels defence stood strong in a goalless draw at Park View Road, writes David Tancred.

The first chance of the game fell to Slough on two minutes as Johnny Goddard swept in a lovely corner to George Wells with the defender’s effort being blocked out for another corner.

On seven minutes, Rhys Forster produced the first great save of the evening as Stefan Payne’s curling effort for Welling was tipped wide by the number one.

The first half was a game of limited chances for both sides as they tried to get a foothold in the game and a few crunching tackles stopped the game from flowing.

Despite the wet and windy conditions, the Rebels away support was in fine voice tonight urging the team on through every pass and tackle.

The last chance of the first half fell to Ben Harris as the number nine’s header was safely claimed by Kai McKenzie in the Welling goal after a good long throw from Guy Hollis.

In the second half the Rebels almost got off to the perfect start as Goddard’s strike from just inside the box was headed clear by the Welling defence.

On 49, Rhys Forster produced yet another top drawer save after Devonte Aransibia found himself in behind the Slough defence and one on one with Rhys Forster who brilliantly tipped the midfielder’s effort out for a corner.

The whole back line for Slough was immense throughout the whole match with Josh Jackman doing his part on 60 minutes with a crucial block from the defender putting an end to a dangerous Welling counterattack.

Lee Togwell nearly produced a spectacular goal on 84 minutes after doing well down the right-hand side and floating a ball into the box which caught Kai McKenzie in the Welling goal off guard and went just over the bar.

The last chance of the game was through Arnold Matshazi on 88 minutes after George Hunt won the ball and found Matshazi in the six-yard area with the number seven’s effort on the turn going over the bar.

Welling tried to find a winner late on but Rhys Forster and the Slough defence stood firm and got the Rebels a crucial point on the road.

That’s the first clean sheet for the Rebels in seven games as well as the first goalless game in 65 matches.

Slough’s next game comes away at Hungerford Town as the Rebels look to build on the positives from tonight’s result.
