Slough fans came into this game hoping that the Rebels could halt their spiral of depression and win this vital 6 pointer between two clubs flirting with the trap door of the British Gas League – and they did not leave disappointed as the home side won only their third league game of the season.
Newport started the brighter of the two sides and gained a penalty in the first few minutes after Browne was adjudged to have fouled Saunders in the penalty area. Saunders dusted himself and took the penalty which was brilliantly saved by Barnard down to his left.
This save lifted the Slough team and Tom Attrell and Danny Jeffreys started to attack the Newport side down their respective flanks. Many crosses came in from these two and Slough were unfortunate not to connect with some of them, Wilkinson had the first real Slough shot which was easily saved by Webb. From this shot Newport broke quickly and Barnard made an excellent save from Steele’s resulting shot.
Danny Jeffreys continued to terrorise the Newport defence and was unlucky to blaze one over from 10 yards after a great run. Soon after this Newport captain Darren Powell somehow managed to miss an open goal when it seemed easier to score. Attrell had a cross shot easily save soon after and Danny Jeffreys missed two more chances as he continued to run at the Newport defence.
Just before half time Jeffreys had to exit the game with what looked like a hamstring strain, and Harper replaced him. With virtually the last kick of the half Salaka headed in Darron Wilkinson’s swerving corner to give Slough a 1-0 half time lead.
Slough continued to dominate and started brightly with Wilkinson and Attrell combining to leave Harper with the ball at his feet 5 yards out with only the keeper to beat, unfortunately Harper got under the ball and blazed it in the general direction of Wycombe.
During the second half Robinson started to make more progress down the right wing and he created some excellent chances for the strikers, with Charles probably the biggest culprit as he missed one when he was within 5 yards of the goal. Attrell nearly got himself on the score sheet on the hour mark when Charles had worked well down the left but the resulting shot was easily saved.
Barnard, whose distribution was excellent all day, was beginning to find the Slough strikers and wingers with his long kicks and one of these found Salaka who rounded two Newport players before shooting just wide.
Salaka, who put in a superb performance, created Slough’s second with an excellent mazy run past two defenders. As the keeper advanced, Salaka squared the ball to Charles who tapped into an empty net from a few yards out. At 2-0 the game was effectively over, and after a flurry of substitutions from both teams, Slough had the final chance of the game when Stanley Mugisha, who worked well after coming on, nearly scored in the final seconds.
