Officials and fans alike were held up making the journey to North London's Wingate & Finchley as one of the referee's assistants arived late delaying the kick off by fifteen minutes and a minibus transporting some of the Slough support was not able to arrive until midway through the second half.
The match itself was played in wet blustery conditions, although to their credit, both sides attempted to play neat football, as any aerial passes were heavily affected by the wind which played havoc with any clearances from either keeper.
Slough started well and debutant Nick Gyoury saw a headed effort cleared off the line early before Wingate took the lead. A mistake from Zepherin led to a Wingate free kick near the edge of the area. As the ball was crossed in Clive Wilson was on hand to place his volley past the stranded Zepherin.
An uncharacteristic mistake from Paul Barrowcliff nearly allowed Wingate a second, but a good stop from Zepherin prevented the hosts from extending their lead. From the resulting clearance, Slough broke away with Byron Bubb who squared the ball to Ryan Spencer who calmly lofted the ball over Andy Walker in the Wingate goal from twenty yards to draw Slough level.
Slough nearly extended their lead after 22 minutes as a Sammy Winston cross was spilled by Walker, but Byron Bubb was unable to capitalise as he shot wide. It was Byron Bubb again who nearly gave Slough the lead shortly before half time. Utilising his pace which was causing Wingate all sorts of problems he gained some space and shot from the edge of the area which brought a great fingertip save from Walker to deny the young winger his second Rebels goal.
Slough finished the half on top as they created the final chance of the half on the stroke of half time. An Anthony Howard cross was volleyed goalward by Boot, but again, Walker proved his worth in the Wingate goal by saving to his left.
Slough took the lead early on in the second half when Sammy Winston was able to capitalise on a mistake by the Wingate defence. Conditions played their part in the goal as a long ball was sliced by a Wingate defender leaving Sammy to break clean through with only Walker to beat. Given his current form, Winston was in no mood to miss and calmly slotted the ball past Walker as the keeper advanced to put Slough in front.
The introduction of Watford loanee Simon Patterson unfortunately made little difference to the Rebels as he struggled to adapt to the blustery conditions and also took a heavy tackle early on which seemed to affect his game. The conditions had not relented as both sides began to struggle to create any clear chances with Slough seemingly happy to protect their slender lead. Slough paid the price with about ten minutes remaining as some one touch passing led to a pass for Matthew Harold. The Wingate striker turned Gyoury and shot low to Zepherin's left from the edge of the area to hand Wingate the equaliser they were searching for.
Slough had the final laugh though as they sparked back into life. A surging run from the half way line from Sammy Winston resulted in him being brought down on the edge of the area. Michael Gilkes stepped up and fired home the free kick from twenty yards to put Slough into the lead for the second time. Despite some late Wingate pressure forcing a series of corners, Slough looked comfortable to protect their lead and held on to secure the win.
