A second half goal from Slough Town midfielder Byron Bubb gave the Rebels a narrow victory over Barton Rovers on Saturday.
The Rebels were not at their best and despite dominating possession for long stages they failed to create many chances. Many Rebels fans thought it would be one of those days until Bubb scored the vital goal. Slough were without influential captain Steve Daly and they looked nervous at the back early on. Luckily Barton did not take advantage of this fact and the Rebels defence eventually settled down.
The away side did have the first chance of the match though when a free-kick on the edge of the area saw Richard Fisherhit the ball over Adrian Blake's crossbar. This seemed to wake up the Rebels as they began to play some good football. They nearly took the lead midway through the half when Ryan Spencer hit a dipping half-volley from outside the area. The ball hit the underside of the bar with Sammy Winston unable to gather the follow-up.
Byron Bubb had the next chance for the Rebels when the midfielder latched onto Veli Hakki's pass and saw his near-post shot from a difficult angle saved. The Rebels last chance of the half fell to striker Sammy Winston who saw his effort from the left hit the outside of the post.
Like the first-half Slough started sluggishly in the second and Barton took control of the half in the opening ten minutes. Striker Drew Roberts had a chance for Barton after a long goal kick by goalkeeper Gilham, but his effort was saved by Blake.
Soon after Fisher again hit a free-kick over the bar and soon after John Coley hit a shot that was well blocked by the Rebels defence. Slough slowly began to dominate possession in this half. They eventually got the breakthrough goal when Hakki found Bubb out wide. The Rebels new signing beat his marker and space opened up for him inside the area. He hit a powerful shot into the net.
Bubb had another chance soon after when he cut across the Barton defence from the right and hit a shot just past the post. In the remaining minutes Barton pressurised the Rebels with a flurry of long free kicks and corners into the area, but the Slough defence dealt well with the attacks and the Rebels claimed all three-points.
The worrying thing for manager Steve Browne will be what looks like an injury to midfielder Michael Gilkes and with Captain Steve Daly currently injured, the Rebels squad is being stretched. The good news is that Anthony Howard has returned to action and took a place on the bench for this match.
