Well, they weren't that bothered anyway, but Slough Town won't be lifting the Berks and Bucks Cup this season after making an extra time exit at soggy Marlow on Tuesday night.
In recent years Slough have come to regard the competition as an extra fixture burden rather than a sought after piece of stlverware and though they took a strong squad to Marlow it's doubtful too many tears were shed when Caesar netted the home side's scrambled winner, eight minutes from the end of extra time to seal Marlow's first win against Slough.
Town dictated play in the last twenty minutes but were guilty of missing their chances; the best of which fell to Mark Quamina from a Mark Fiore cross, Brian Lee headed firmly against the crossbar and when the hall came out Quamina had only to roll the ball home from close range but instead with a minimum of composure, blasted the ball over.
So into extra time and still Slough pressed, Mark Fiore, who after his disappointing show at Runcorn, was back to something like his best, combined with lan Hazel and crossed for Sayer arriving at the near post, Sayer's low shot defeated Kevin Mitchell but again found woodwork.
Minutes later Brian Lee lost the ball in the mud and Caeser broke away to, eventually, bundle the ball past Bunting.
The week hadn't started well when Slough lost—at Runcorn on Saturday with Briley blasting his players for a display which he said lacked "concentration and at times commitment".
Briley's mood wasn't improved by the sending off of Alan Dowson — for the second time this season. "I thought he was unlucky, even the lad involved said he just fell and we felt he was offside anyway, I think the linesman was going to give him offside — that that's typical of our season."
One piece of good news —and in the light of Dowson's red card, entirely necessary news — is the signing of 24 year-old central defender Alan Lewis, who joins from Ebbw Vale. Lewis has played 40 times for Cardiff and at 6ft 2 has the sort of physical presence Briley wants.
Further encouragement for Slough comes with the news that Steve Whitby should be playing reserve football before the end of the month.
