Last year a Bank Holiday Monday 2-0 success against Dagenham Redbridge albeit at Wexham Park —was a fourth consecutive victory for Slough Town and sent them clear at the top of the Conference table.
Twelve months on title favourites Dagenham again provided the opposition, this time at their own Victoria Road fortress and a 1-0 defeat saw Rebels tumble from top spot.
It was Slough's least impressive performance of the season to date and Trevor Bunting's best — the league leaders never really came to terms with a changed formation, injuries to Les Briley and Andy Sayer forcing Docherty to tamper with his favoured formula, Darren Hancock moving to sweeper and triallist Gavin MacPherson coming in.
That John Still's side had just the one goal to celebrate was down to the agility of Bunting. Heavily criticised towards the end of the last campaign, Bunting is clearly determined to his new boss and one remarkable first half save to thwart Gary Jones will have done his often fragile confidence no harm.
As an attacking force Slough were disappointing, MacPherson, replacing Sayer — the first league game the little man has missed since joining Slough 13 months ago —did go close twice but with Fiore restricted to a left back role, Town missed his flair.
Their only real effort of note to the break was an effort from distance by Mark Quamina tipped over by John McKenna.
