Slough had gone top of the Conference with a comfortable 2-0 victory against Halifax —relegated from division three last year.
With Morrys Scott, in particular silencing a few critics with an encouraging performance alongside the busy Sayer, Slough always looked a threat going forward and when Scott was hauled down inside the box, Ian Hazel sent Darren Heyes the wrong way with his 22nd minute penalty.
Halifax's Martin Filson, a £3,500 summer buy from Stalybridge and Billy Barr received their marching orders for second bookable offences early in the second half and Scott added to their woes curling in Slough's second after Hazel had burst through.
Sayer limped off allowing MacPherson a first run out but it was 48 hours later before his absence would truly be felt.
At the back Briley's sweeper role was once again effective with Brian Lee making rapid progress, enjoying another impressive display.
Fiore gave Barr a torrid time before he got his red card and Hazel at last showed the form he regularly produced in last season's campaign.
For the second time in a week more than 1,100 fans were there to see it and it does seem that Docherty has negotiated his first hurdle safely — convincing fans that he can build on the foundations laid by Dave Kemp.
But like Kemp his problems may begin when the limitations of his squad — in numbers at least —are exposed by injury.
Briley and Sayer were missing at Dagenham Redbridge and their return to form and fitness is crucial to Docherty's hopes of continued success.
