The 33 year-old striker, released by former boss Dave Kemp, was on target after 40 minutes of Slough's tricky opener at Stalybridge, starting the new campaign as he ended the last.

And just to prove that this was no one-off success, he rose above the Dover defence to head in a Mark Fiore cross at the far post after 33 minutes of Tuesday night's clash at Wexham Park.

Both games will have encouraged both Docherty and the Rebels faithful that there is every chance of the club repeating their title chase of the '92'93 this term.

The 1,074 crowd may have expected the two new boys on the team sheet, Dover's David Leworthy and Slough's Gavin McPherson, to provide much of the entertainment on Tuesday night.

But Leworthy was snuffed out by a tight Rebels defence, while McPherson, signed from Barnet, spent the full 90 minutes on the bench, along with fellow recent arrival Lee Margerson.

The Slough play was both skilful and enterprising, and they could and should have scored more. Meanwhile at the other aid Tevor Bunting dealth with all that came his way, and pulled off one cracking save in the second half. But this was a terrific team performance which leaves the Rebels as one of only three sides to have won both their opening games, Yeovil, not surprisingly, and Welling being the others.

At Bower Field on Saturday the biggest drama came off the pitch with Stalybridge Celtic's physio Dave Stevens called into early action. The three match officials arrived at the ground with neck injuries having been involved in a five car crash on the way there. Once on the park it was the Rebels who drew the attention, recording only Stalybridge's third home defeat of 1993.

John Doherty's men now await the arrival of Football League relegation side Halifax on Saturday, hoping to repeat their early season run of last term.
