Revenge was certainly sweet last Tuesday week as the Rebels gained a creditable and thoroughly deserve 2-1 victory over the Cardinals. But, unlike the New Year home defeat, the Rebels came out best after dominating the match for lengthy periods.
Fiore and Sayer caused the home side problems throughout the game. Indeed Slough could have taken a first minute lead as a succession of corners were cleared away by the Woking defence.
Woking made the occasional foray into our half, but when ever they threatened, Slough appeared to be equal to it. After 14 minutes, Bushay pushed forward on the right. Cutting inside, his fierce drive appeared goalbound, but was well dealt with by Bunting.
After 14 minutes a superbly struck 25-yard drive from Sayer beat the home 'keeper, but thudded against the upright before being cleared for a corner. We continued to push forward and could have taken a deserved lead as half time approached. Briley and McKinnon combined well before releasing Pluckrose who shot just over the bar.
The second-half started with the Rebels again taking the initiative, but it was to be the home side that broke the deadlock. On 51 minutes Senior released the unmarked Coleman who despatched a 25-yard drive off the post and into the net.
But Slough were level within six minutes. Fiore won the ball on the left, released Hazel who broke to the edge of the home 18-yard box. His first-time effort was blocked, but the ball raced free to Sayer on the right who drove home from 15 yards.
Slough continued to have the better of the exchanges, and finally took the lead with seventeen minutes remaining. Fiore raced into the Woking penalty area before seeing his shot rebound of the post. The ball was half-cleared by the home defence, only for Fiore to regain possession and despatch a cross from the left. As both home 'keeper and defender closed in to gather, the alert Sayer nipped in between them to blast the ball into the roof of the net.
Woking then pushed forward as they tried to get something out of the game, but both Bunting and Anderson performed well to deny the home forwards any realistic scoring opportunities. Slough moved seven points clear in second place as they held on for the narrow win.
