After a minute's silence in respect of the late Bobby Moore, both sides braved the Arctic conditions in the imposing International Stadium In front of a sparse crowd.
Snow covered the pitch as we started and several snow showers followed throughout the course of the match. We had the best of the opening exchanges and looked set to score when a long shot from Whitby just missed the target. Fiore then had a couple of chances before a fine McKinnon effort was well saved by the home 'keeper.
Just before the break the home 'keeper had to be at his best to deny a back-header from his own defender from Fiore's free-kick.
After the break we again dominated for lengthy periods. Sayer troubled the Gateshead defence with his long runs. Fiore had a 30-yard effort well blocked and both Sayer and Hazel had efforts scrambled away.
But it was to be the home side who finally broke the deadlock. A quickly taken goal kick breached the Rebels defence and Dobson raced on the slot the ball past the advancing Bunting with only a couple of minutes left,
There was little time left to battle back for the equaliser and Slough returned home beaten from a match which they deserved at least a point.
