The score line, emphatic though it might be, really does flatter Colchester, who only controlled an entertaining game for the last seven minutes, unfortunately in that time they scored three times.

Up until that time Slough had battled bravely, matching Colchester — who with Wycombe losing at Macclesfield went back on top of the Conference — in most departments.

Chances came and went at both ends in a first half that, considering the dreadful conditions, was high on quality.

Fielder and Donnellan combined for a chance the latter put wide, while Anderson headed just past the post from Hickey's cross.

Colchester player-manager McDonagh and Tony Knight were booked after a clash instigated by McDonagh's reckless tackle. But physical though it was, ugly it wasn't.

United went in front on 58 minutes when breaking swiftly from defence, surviving strong offside claims, Cook crossed for McDonagh to score.

Pressing as they had to, McKinnon was inches away and Donnellan went close, before gaps at the back were exposed.

Masters got the second, Kinsella the third and former Northern Ireland international Ian Stewart completed the scoring.
