Slough cashed in on Mark Adams 46th minute winner in more ways than one on Saturday — as well as the valuable three points, the Rebels stung a local betting shop for £165.
Hearing that a local bookie took bets on all Harrow's home games, the Rebels could not resist a flutter and rustled up a generous stake and placed it on Slough to win at odds of 6-4 against — fourth from bottom of the table Harrow were evens!
If that doesn't show that the lads are still full of confidence, I don't know what does," said manager Alan Davies. We have been playing reasonably well without getting the results, and it's Just frustration that was setting in."
Despite the obvious glee at the side's successful flutter, Davies was more pleased with the way his side knuckled down to avoid their third defeat on the run.
"We put our teeth back in, took a few bites, chewed them up and spat them out," he joked, referring to last week's 'Toothless' headlines. But the Rebels struggled to make their presence felt in the first half, as struggling Borough produced some delightful football, Duncan Hardy and Francis Cassidy were particularly impressive in midfield, with Hardy's excellent distribution launching countless promising attacks.
Fortunately for the visitors, Richard Evans, Mark Hopson and Jimmy Bolton were unable to make any real use of their plentiful possession and it was not until Hardy's ferocious 30-yard drive in the 28th minute, superbly tipped over by keeper Gary Lester, that they looked like scoring.
And seven minutes later, it took some more good work from Slough's on-loan keeper to charge down a close range shot from Evans at the near post.
But even more fortunate was the way Slough snatched the lead a minute later — Lester's huge kick falling to the edge of the Harrow area where keeper Mark Poultney was completely wrong footed by Colin Payne's back pass which trundled inside the upright to gift Slough the lead.
Harrow's reply was swift and spectacular, Cassidy's half-cleared corner falling for Phil Dicker to rifle a 20-yard half-volley into the bottom right hand corner to level the score with only five minutes remaining in the half.
But the killer blow came after only a minute of the second period when Stanley slid an inch perfect through ball into the path of Adams, who coolly tucked the ball between Poultney and the near post.
Stanley almost set up Steve Thompson to put Slough further in front after 68 minutes, but Poultney fingertipped his teasing cross over the head of Thompson lurking on the goalline.
Slough pushed hard for a third, but were happy to settle for, their 2-1 victory after the home keeper pulled off another fine save to deny Brian Greenaway in the 75th minute.
