A stunning quick-fire hat-trick by Steve Thompson enabled Slough to pick themselves up from their disappointing defeat against Farnborough and close the gap at the top of the Vauxhall Opel Premier League on Friday night.

But Thommo's first three goal haul for the Rebels was scored in rather bizarre circumstances as a blanket of fog descended on Wexham Park and disrupted the game....but not Thompson's quest for double figures.

Having scored his first, the Slough striker had to wait an extra seven minutes late in the second half to continue his goal blitz but then notched the next two within a minute of each other. Despite the second half goal flurry, the score line rather flattered Slough who struggled in the first half against a Bognor side who were lacking in imagination and ambition.

Slough could have been one up as early as the third minute when a neat cross by Stanley was met by Adams but superbly turned away by Bognor 'keeper Steele.

It was Bognor who had the more clear cut chances in the opening half though. A cross into the area found Paul Pullen totally unmarked and less than six yards out but his volley was magnificently saved by Bunting.

In the 32nd minute, Burtenshaw missed from close range and just six minutes later Poole rose unmarked only to head Guilles cross over the bar as Bognor piled on the pressure.

Slough managed to weather the storm and went into the break with the scores level but then the elements took charge as the second half started shrouded in mist....within minutes, vast areas of the pitch were obscured.

Then, after 50 minutes, Slough sparked into life. Greenaway, using the fog to his advantage blasted a superb dipping shot from 30 yards which was well tipped over by Steele. Bognor's relief was short-lived though, as from the resultant corner, Thompson rose to head home for a 58th minute lead.

Slough then continued to dominate; Dell blasted just over from a corner, Stanley rose only to head into the 'keepers arms and Thompson couldn't quite meet a Mark Adams cross fully enough to glance in it.

Then after 72 minutes and rantings by Rocks boss Jack Pearce the referee finally stopped the game to see if the fog would lift. Singing and shouting from the Slough supporters entertained the 500 crowd until the fog improved.

Seven minutes later, Slough continued where they had left off and even Bognor sub Price couldn't stop Thompson from providing the supporters with more to cheer about.

Five minutes from time, Thompson was put through and held his nerve to place the ball smartly to Steele's right into the far corner of the net.

A minute later, Stanley found himself on goal after beating Cox and centred the ball for the incoming Steve Thompson to poke home and complete a memorable hat-trick for his 11th goal of the season.
