League Brian Greenaway
He may not have scored a blockbuster of a winning goal, but the debut of Slough's newest signing, Brian Greenaway, was certainly of the 'Cinderella' variety.

Greenaway, who signed on Monday evening, gave a sparkling performance in the Rebels' derby clash with bottom of the table Marlow in borrowed boots. The former Wealdstone and Wycombe midfielder very nearly did not play at all, after leaving his boots in his boss's car.

The frantic search for a pair of size seven boots finally came to an end thanks to injured midfield man, Mark Adams. He then proceeded to turn in a fine performance, constantly threatening the shaky Marlow defence with pace and precision.

Manager Alan Davies was delighted at having beaten several clubs in the rush to sign Greenaway, and at his performance on Tuesday evening.

And Greenaway's arrival ensures that Slough continue to compile a squad that at last appears to have the strength in depth to lift the championship.

Despite failing to illuminate a fog bound Wexham Park with the stylish football that has disposed of better sides than Marlow, Slough rarely looked threatened as centre-backs Jeff Bateman and Tony Knight were always on hand to snuff out any danger.

As a result, a competent first half display that could have yielded four or five goals proved enough to wrap up the points and restores Slough's four point lead at the top of the table.

The first goal came after just two minutes when a half cleared corner allowed Tony Dennis to cross to the far post, where Bateman rose to head down for Steve Thompson to knock the ball home on the line.

Then after 35 minutes, Neal Stanley put Thompson through on the right, the linesman's flag mystically remained unmoved and Stanley raced all of 40 yards to meet the return ball and slot past the advancing Steve Crompton.
