League
Top of the league and cocks of the walk !
That's Rebels after this astounding game. Travelling supporters could hardly believe their eyes as Slough, looking a beaten side and 2-0 down at half time, came out and played super football to earn full points and the top spot by right.
Chairman Mervyn Jones said afterwards " This is first class. It might be a bit early to be leading, but now our job is to stay there!".
Rebels, with Bobby Dell back, but otherwise much the same side who had endured a 5-1 Clubcall Cup drubbing only the previous Tuesday, looked as though they might be continuing in that vein for the first 45 minutes.
Though Tony Dennis showed signs of good form, the rest of the Rebels looked a little lack lustre as Tooting displayed their long ball style with real flair and scored two smartly worked goals in the process.
But if ever there was a game of two halves, this was that game.
From the whistle at the re-start, it was as if Alan Davies had worked some magic inside the Rebel shirts. Dennis, Ray Duffy and Keith White, especially, turned on the neat, close passing play that Slough can achieve when at their best and the whole team took on a sparkle that had been missing earlier.
That sparkle could have disappeared when Bobby Dell missed a penalty after 20 minutes of the half, but the team were in better heart and seemed to brush the set back aside.
John Watt, Keith White and Neal Stanley were the men who scored the goals that took Rebels to the top and they had every reason to be pleased with themselves, managing to play effective football on a pitch that was bouncy and uneven.
