Slough's fifth league win of the season, thanks to a first half Neal Stanley goal, moved them up to second place in the table.
But Slough made hard work of beating a young, struggling Dagenham side, who had conceded 11 goals in their previous three matches, including a 5-0 thrashing by first division Staines in the AC Delco Cup four days earlier.
Dagenham though were strengthened by the return of midfielder Paul Goyette, who re-joined the club from Maidstone the day before the game. Goyette certainly tightened things up in the middle, and set up Dagenham's first chance in the eighth minute, putting Paul Donovan away on the right only for the winger's low cross to be blocked by Trevor Bunting.
Until then Slough had looked the sharper side, and they underlined that by going ahead in the 14th minute. Steve Thompson gave Steve Newman the slip, when the tall Dagenham defender might have done better, and laid the ball low across the area to the lurking Stanley. His shot on the turn had little power, and Dagenham 'keeper Dave Morgan - another new arrival from Dulwich Hamlet- got a hand to the ball, but was unable to stop it nestling in the corner.
After that, the rest of the first half belonged to Dagenham, with Mel Woodruff proving a handful up front. But they were let down by lack of experience, and some indifferent finishing.
Four minutes after Stanley's goal, Donovan's free kick at the other end caused a panic in the Slough defence, before Jimmy Cooper's shot was turned behind. Then in the 29th minute an effort from Cooper dropped onto the bar, and Gary Seymour volleyed the rebound over the top.
Slough wasted a good chance a minute after the break which, had they taken it, would have given them some breathing space. Tony Dennis latched onto an error out on the right and cut inside, only to push his shot just wide.
Dennis then provided a cross in the 59th minute, but Morgan was equal to Thompson's header. Woodruff hit back for the home side after 65 minutes, showing good control, but less skill with his shot. Three minutes later Morgan saved a Thompson shot with his legs, and from the corner clawed away a header from Gary Dodd.
Dagenham then introduced both substitutes within three minutes of each other in a late bid to get back on terms. But, in between, Slough went close again, Keith White's powerful effort coming down off the bar, only to be cleared.
