A goal by Colin Landeg a minute before half time, gave Slough a decisive victory over Bromley, last season's Vauxhall Opel League runners-up, at Hayes Lane on Saturday.

Slough, still without Stanley and Jacobs, and playing an unfit Wanklyn, put their two recent defeats behind them with a competent display of football, and finished deserved winners against a Bromley side which lacked the quality that took them to second spot in the table last year.

The Rebels went close as early as the tenth minute when How on the edge of the Bromley penalty area, received the ball from White and played it wide to Dennis whose cross was deflected for a corner. From the resultant corner, Thompson rose, but only to head the ball inches wide. Bromley also went close after 16 minutes when a good cross by Burman was cleared to the edge of the Slough box by Wanklyn, and Collins rushed in only to blast his effort just over the Slough crossbar.

Slough had an excellent chance to take the lead in the 27th minute when a good ball by Dodd split the Bromley defence and released Thompson, who put in a low cross and How, playing up front in this game, followed in at the far post only to see his effort go the wrong side of the upright. Slough continued to soak up the Bromley pressure, with Knight outstanding in the defence, and began creating some good chances for their own forwards, who became frustrated, often being caught in the Bromley offside trap.

The breakthrough came after 44 minutes, a midfield scramble saw Landeg release Thompson, who with only the 'keeper to beat, saw his effort blocked. But the excellent Landeg was following up, and as the ball landed at his feet, he chipped Hayes whose outstretched hand couldn't prevent the ball dropping over the line.

Bromley almost equalised at the start of the second half when a Roles cross was headed towards goal by Young, and Bunting dived to tip the ball over the bar. The resultant corner was swung in by Roles and Bunting dropped the cross and the quick reactions of Burman went unrewarded as he smashed the loose ball over the bar.

Slough should have had a second goal, as the midfield began to find gaps in the Bromley defence, when Thompson was put through on the left and crossing to the far post, Wanklyn dived low to head the ball past the post with the goal at his mercy.

Bromley brought on striker Jacobs for McMenemy in the 65th minute, in an attempt to stop the domination of the Slough defence in their half of the pitch. Thompson was put clean through again in the 67th minute, but he was denied by a brilliant one handed save by Hayes in the Bromley goal.

Slough substituted Gold for Wanklyn in the 73rd minute, as Wanklyn's lack of match fitness began to tell. Scotting came nearest to scoring for Bromley in the latter half of the game when his weaving run finished with him blasting just over from 25 yards.

Bromley made a second substitution in an attempt to salvage a point in the 78th minute when Parry was brought on for Young. Collins was booked in the 79th minute for bringing down Thompson, but Slough failed to capitalise as the free kick was easily saved.

Landeg should have finished Bromley off in the 88th minute, when being clean through he tried to round the 'keeper from six yards, but stopped, checked, and his final shot was cleared off the line by Shaw.
