This was a sparkling performance from the Rebels, who were winning their fourth out of five away games - a record that any club in the land could envy.
Now they are second top of the Vauxhall Opel League on goal difference from Hendon, and they have seldom had a better start to any season. The quality of football from Slough was pleasing all through this game.
Unchanged since their previous away victory over former bogey team Dagenham, the ploy of pushing Paul Gardam at left back up behind Keith White and letting him play much more of a midfield role is obviously paying splendid dividends.
The Rebels dominated most of the play and had opened the score in the 13th minute. Steve Thompson picked up a ball in midfield, neatly turned an opponent and hit the pass into the centre that enabled Neal Stanley to prod home.
There was an element of chance involved, with the Croydon keeper looking as though he had the shot covered, but fumbling it. Croydon were more active, as though stung by the reverse, and the rest of the half was fairly even.
But, from the restart, Slough seemed to have moved up a gear and began a polished period. They had many chances, but were unable to make the best of them. As if to emphasise that this was really going to be his night, Neal Stanley made the game safe for the Rebels with a truly memorable goal.
With the watch at around 22 minutes of the second half, he picked up the ball on the half way line, ghosted with ease past two defenders, and hit a magnificent shot from 28 yards, leaving the keeper helpless. It was the sort of goal that deserved an ovation and it duly came....the effort winning applause from the home fans as well as Slough's travelling supporters.
The whole display bodes well for the future - and it seems clear that the Rebels are intent on making sure of a valid crack at the league title.
