Just when Slough seemed to have turned the corner they took another big step backwards. Two wins, including the triumph at Cheltenham, were followed by Saturday's horrible home defeat against relegation haunted Bromley.
Manager Alan Davies admitted dismally: "We were looking to go on from Tuesday's win. But it just didn't happen. We didn't play very well. “ Once Slough had been caught out at two corners after 17 and 20 minutes there was never any way back in a bad-tempered match in which four people were booked.
Too many Rebels were playing below their best for the home side to have any chance of a recovery. Mark Davis had his poorest game for Slough, Jimmy Jacobs had his unhappiest game in his new right back position and once again the Rebels looked unlikely to conjure up any magic near their opponents box.
Defensively the Slough shortcomings were there for all to see as Bromley stole their two goal advantage. After 17 minutes Dick Tydeman's corner was headed on by Godfrey Jacobs to give Ronnie Murrock a simple nod-in at the far post.
Three minutes later a low Tydeman corner found Peter Shaw 15 yards out and he scooped the ball over everyone into the back of the net. That corner came when Trevor Bunting made a magnificent save to claw out a powerful shot from Alan Scotting that seemed destined for the top corner.
Davies complained: "From the first corner we should have defended better although the ball went straight on the fellow's head. The second goal came when we didn't do what we should have done. There was nobody picking him up on the edge of the box. “
Tony Knight, who had forced a fine save from Nicky Sullivan with a 20 yard drive early in the game, played a lovely ball to put Kenny Wilson away after 35 minutes, but when Rowan Dodds headed Wilson's centre back across goal the ball was cleared.
Davis was booked for arguing and Dodds hit the deck after pushing the ball past the 'keeper, but was denied a penalty, despite the linesman's flagging. Paul Waites moved forward to the edge of the box and fired a shot at Sullivan after 56 minutes, before Knight was cautioned, joining Bromley's Steve Ward in the book.
With 15 minutes to go Bromley rubbed more salt in Slough's wound by scoring their third. Murrock went down the right and the ball ran for Summersby. His shot across goal was half controlled by Godfrey Jacobs and Murrock had the simple job of finishing from a couple of yards.
Jock McLeod's arrival as substitute was explosive one as Bromley's players decided he had gone in late on the 'keeper and attempted to set about him. Chief bully was Shaw, booked after 85 minutes for a foul on Dodds. From the free-kick Jeff Bateman won the ball in the air and saw it loop off a defender for Dodds to poke home a consolation goal.
