Odd job man Jimmy Jacobs turned up in the right place to give Slough three Vauxhall-Opel League points.
Three weeks earlier Jacobs scored twice while filling in for Keith White on the left of midfield against Barking. And on Saturday Jacobs again had to abandon his usual berth on the right to cover for the loss of suspended striker Jimmy Brown and injured winger Kenny Wilson, suffering from a knock he took two days earlier.
Manager Alan Davies told Jacobs to push forward just behind the front two of Rowan Dodds and Jock McLeod and that left him in Just the place to score the Rebels' 57th minute winner.
Under little pressure, Bishop's Stortford defender Andy Goodchild tried a fancy back heel that went Straight to an unmarked Jacobs on the right corner of the box. He saw 'keeper Eddie Coe coming out to lose him down and calmly lifted the ball over him to the far corner.
It gave the Wexham Park crowd a victory to cheer, even if a performance that was steady rather than spectacular had produced very little in the way of good attacking football.
Davies said his players were finding it hard to lift themselves for so many matches, Saturday's being their seventh in 14 days. “It is hard to keep yourself going," he said. “But only we were going to win. The only way Stortford could have won was if we made a silly mistake.“
Bishop’s Stortford almost scored first after John McDaid and Devon Petty had run into each other on the edge of their box. The ball went forward to Micky Nunn and it needed a fine save by Trevor Bunting, coming off his line, to avert the danger.
Coe had to be sure-handed to cling on to Keith White's effort from 20 yards and a few minutes later he dived to his left to turn away another long range blast from White.
Bunting, presented with the March Player of the Month award before the game, moved quickly to his left to parry Duncan Hardy's 30 yard shot, but Slough had to wait until the second half for their next real chance.
White sent a free-kick deep to Rowan Dodds, whose header was pushed away by Coe before Jock McLeod slid the rebound wide.
Free-kicks continued to be Slough's likely source of a goal, Coe having to make diving saves from White and Stephen Playle from outside the area.
Then Jacobs stepped in, scoring his 56th minute goal and two minutes later giving Coe an easy shot to save after a good manoeuvre 18 yards out.
Hardy put a free shot wide after Kevin Nicholas pulled the ball back from Keith the byline and Fletcher chipped over the bar with Bunting out of position.
