Jimmy Jacobs came within inches of a hat-trick as the Rebels easily won their first game for five weeks against a lacklustre Barking.
The East Enders, who shocked Slough in January's Vauxhall-Opel league meeting when they gave the Rebels a three-goal start and still won, were well and truly avenged in one of the poorest games at Wexham Park for some time.
That was probably predictable, considering Slough’s spell "on the dole" and Barking's pathetic away record of only one win in 14 outings. A ton of sand and penetrating sun made for a stunning contrast in conditions from the rock-hard, freezing grounds of the last month, but the big freeze hiatus prompted a wretched opening few minutes and things didn't get much better.
Slough broke the ice in the 14th minute. Steve Playle and Ken Wilson combined on the left, Brown rose to meet the winger's cross which was fumbled by the Blues' ex-Southend and Norwich City 'keeper Mervyn Cawston. Jimmy Jacobs was on hand to drill a cross shot home from close range.
The industrious Brown then forced Cawston to save at the second attempt and it was mid-way through the opening period until the visitors threatened at all.
Giant stopper Geoff Spooner a Joel Garner lookalike towered to meet a cross, but headed straight into Bunting's arms.
The Rebels continued to dominate, with Jacobs, Playle and impressive debutant Colin Keys in for the injured Keith White running the show from midfield. But few openings were created in and around the box and a drab first half ended 1-0.
Things got better after the Rebels showed greater break if only slightly-as signs of shaking off their match rustiness. But Trevor Bunting, Slough's on-loan 'keeper from Wycombe Wanderers and their ninth this term, had to go full-stretch to save well from Blackhall, as the visitors finally showed a spark of attacking ingenuity.
Roving Rowan Dodds forced Cawston into action, but Bunting was again the more troubled, as he had to dash out to deny Satchell.
The game was becoming both sides still lacked bite in more evenly poised, but front of goal, although Brown and Dodds peppered shots after Barking's defence was caught square.
The issue was finally settled just eight minutes from time. Brown squared for Dodds to beat the 'keeper, but hit the bar. Keys picked up the loose ball and fired in a shot which was beaten away, but fell to Jacobs who pushed the ball home.
But after all that, there was a suggestion of an own goal, as Spooner vainly tried to clear it! Jacobs, seeking Slough's league hat-trick of the season, could so easily have claimed it in the dying seconds, but planted a free header within Cawston's grasp.
