During Slough Town's recent up and downs Rowan Dodds has always been a constant source of inspiration to the Wexham Park faithful. And on Saturday he did not let his supporters down with another stirring display - playing a major role in both goals - and helping the Rebels to a welcome first Servowarm Isthmian League Premier Division win this year.

There was also another bonus for the fans with Dave Russell returning to play his first full league game for almost a year following a crippling back injury. And the Rebels' longest serving player did not disappoint, showing flashes of the old Dave Russell which made him such a Wexham Park favourite.

He created Slough's first goal and showed some good touches before tiring and being replaced in the 72nd minute - but it was certainly good to see him back in first team action.

Still fourth in the table it was vital Slough won this match if they were to have any outside chance of maintaining interest in the title battle.

There was plenty of early hope for Terry Reardon's side as both Russell and Keith White whipped in dangerous crosses. From the first, White's header went just wide and then Devon Petty brought out a good save from the giant Mark McCutcheon.

After 28 minutes came the vital breakthrough and it was Dodds' speed and skill which brought about the goal. Russell sent the striker away with a superb splitting pass, he raced clear of the defence and then was crudely brought down by McCutcheon as he tried to round him.

It had to be a penalty and White stepped up to fire home his 15th goal of the season. Eddie Hutchinson then made a timely stop to keep out Graham Stewart's shot and while Billericay's approach play caught the eye it rarely took them anywhere or threatened Steve Walton's goal.

The second half saw Slough playing good, positive football which unfortunately was marred by some terrible finishing. They produced some fine multi-man moves but these constantly broke down once the ball reached the danger area.

Dodds raced clear and then placed his final effort over the bar and then Dylan Evans fired wide when well positioned at the far post. Peter Skerritt and Steve Norman continued to shape up nicely as a central defensive partnership and although Russell Keen was most impressive in the Billericay engine room they created few threatening chances.

And then after 77 minutes came Slough's clincher and it was all down to Dodds' perseverance. He chased a ball which many players would have given up and managed to dispossess Alan Day.

The ball fell to Eddie Nash and under pressure from Petty his back pass was reached by the ever willing Dodds, and he scored a splendid goal really out of nothing and all of his own making.

Minutes later Dodds again burst through but spoilt it all with a poor finish and then White was guilty of a similar error.

Billericay ended with a flourish with Stewart missing a great chance and then Danny Westwood chipping Walton only to see the ball run wide. This may not have been Slough's greatest display but the three points are a precious gift and the way Dodds darted around so confidently up front was a joy to watch.
