Cup fighters Slough were brought to earth with a bump last night when they were sent sliding out of the Hitachi Cup.
But the 5-2 scoreline in this fourth round tie flattered high riding Dulwich. And but for a missed penalty by Dave Russell, Slough would have completed a remarkable fight back.
Dulwich seemed to have the game sewn up when Kimm Connett - with a speculative 25 yard shot, and then Peter Kingston, a superb individual effort - scored in the 7th and 16th minutes. But Slough battled away on a rain soaked pitch to pull a goal back in the 33rd minute.
Charlie Marks - in for Terry Reardon - started the move and also provided the final pass to Paul Lee who wrong footed the Dulwich defence before driving the ball past ex-Charlton goalkeeper Graham Tutt. Three minutes later though, Terry Eames headed home Dulwich's first and only corner of the game.
But the lead was cut again in the 38th minute when Dave Russell intercepted a cross field pass, raced to the byline before pulling the ball back past Tutt for Peter Feely to stoop and head into an empty net.
On the stroke of half time Micky Wharton saw his 30 yard effort crash against the post. And six minutes after the break Marks was bundled over in the Dulwich box, but Russell ballooned the spot kick over the bar.
That was the turning point and, although Slough fought furiously for an equaliser, Dulwich weathered the storm.
And further Dulwich goals from Eames, 78 minutes, and substitute Kevin Wallace with his first touch of the ball four minutes later rounded off a brave, but sad night for Slough.
