ON the first Saturday of November Slough entertained Tooting in the F. A. Cup and were easy victors by 4-0. After the game the clubhouse was full of supporters cheerfully exchanging conversation with their heroes. One month later Slough, fielding much the same side, stayed in their dressing room and the bars were empty of fans who had left the ground seething with disgust.
They had seen the Wexham Park side completely flattened by a 2-1 defeat in a match in which Tooting missed half a dozen open goals and should have buried Slough in the first half.
Slough themselves put on a negative display that was beyond anything that any club at their worst could conceive and of which the players should be utterly ashamed.
The midfield was as so often, conspicuous by its absence, but on this occasion there were no forwards functioning either. Manager Arpino holds in high esteem Paul Lee and Micky Kiely. On Saturday they let him down comprehensively by taking virtually no part in the match at all. Small wonder that Peter Feely found himself looking at his own goal most of the time as he lost confidence in himself!
Many of the hard core fans who were sensing a revival in the club's fortunes could hardly contain themselves and demanded to know why a team who can be so successful in cup matches seem to care nothing for the club's standing in the league. Ten minutes from time Slough surprisingly pulled one back, when, in a goalmouth scramble, Feely saw his shot screw off Grubb past Sproul.
Just on time Slough might have scored an undeserved equaliser when Feely delayed his pass and Slough were caught offside. The effort followed three ridiculous misses by Tooting who by then should have been six goals to the good.
This match marked the half-way stage in the season. On Saturday Slough apparently dug their own relegation grave and will need to win half of their remaining fixtures to be certain of staying up.
The Slough players will need to give 120 minutes of football on Tuesday against Leatherhead if they are to keep faith with their fans - that is of course, if they decide to watch them!
