Paul Lee
Paul Lee, who had been in bed for two days with a heavy cold and was doubtful until the morning of the match, shrugged off his lethargy to grab the 85th minute winner in Saturday's F.A. Cup second qualifying round tie at Carshalton.
The 25-year-old Lee, who despite feeling tired and having trouble with his breathing gave the overworked home defence several worrying moments, said: "I missed training on Thursday and didn't feel too good on the morning of the match. But as Mick Kiely was injured I gave it a go and came through quite well."
Lee's goal - his fourth of the season - brings Slough another away match in the third qualifying round on October 21 against Southall, who beat Camberley in a replay.
Slough should have had the game wrapped up by half-time after dominating for most of the opening 45 minutes. They had a lot of possession but found it hard to overcome Carshalton's defensive barrier.
Lee saw a left foot shot parried by keeper Finch early on and Metcalfe headed narrowly wide before Slough took the lead in the 27th minute. Friend's cross was headed down by Lee and Metcalfe tucked the ball swiftly into the net.
As half-time approached Lee hit the bar with a hard drive which Finch appeared to think was going well off target. Carshalton were virtually non-existent as an attacking force and their best first-half effort was a shot by Walker which went tamely wide.
Early in the second-half Carshalton had Gedney booked for a foul on Turl. Friend also got booked later in the game for a foul on Dade after allowing his enthusiasm to cloud his better judgment.
Slough became overconfident and were shocked when Carshalton equalised in the 72nd minute through Gary Allan, who had come on as substitute for mid-field player Tony Combe.
A short corner by Reynolds led to Dennis crossing for Walker to get in a header which keeper Teale could only block by the post. Allan pounced to knock the ball into the net.
Slough regained control and Metcalfe had a shot cleared off the line. Then came Lee's winner. After efforts from Lee and Russell had been blocked by the frantic Carshalton defence, the ball came out to Lee who hit it firmly into the net with his reliable left foot.
If Slough had shown the 'killer instinct' they would have won by a much bigger margin, but they gave a competent display, with Turl making a successful return to the defence after injury.
