Vastly improved displays by newcomers Richard Strong, Barry Metcalfe and keeper Richard Teale earned Slough Town their first Isthmian League point of the season at Carshalton on Wednesday.
Teale made some amends for his nightmare debut the previous Saturday by pulling off two fine saves from Kember and Gaydon which brought nods of approval from the onlooking Arsenal keeper Paul Barron, one of Teale's predecessors at Slough.
But ex-Aldershot reserve Mark Foster had a quiet league debut in the Slough midfield, and Borough Road College student Paul Holder, a former Horsham player, made a bigger impact when he replaced Foster in a second half which Carshalton dominated after falling behind.
Slough, who were unlucky when Metcalfe netted in the sixth minute only for a teammate to be given offside, used a 4-4-2 formation to good effect to overcome the absence of injured strikers Russell and Kiely.
Foster and Cooke often burst forward from mid-field, and Foster should have scored in the 25th minute when he shot over from close range. Kember, put clear by Maurace, had an equally good chance to put Carshalton ahead but fired wide as Teale advanced.
Slough regained the upper hand and Gane's cross from the right resulted in Metcalfe getting in a bullet like header which keeper Finch did well to tip over.
The visitors were rewarded for their endeavours with a superb goal in the 53rd minute. Reardon's free-kick from the left was headed down by Metcalfe and little Paul Lee spun sharply to hammer the ball out of Finch's reach.
Carshalton went desperately close to equalising in the 69th minute. Gaydon had one shot charged down by Teale and another blocked on the line.
One minute later Slough sent on substitute Holder for the tiring Foster but they couldn't weather the storm and in the 72nd minute Gary Allen grabbed a fine equaliser from a Dennis cross.
Slough then had to survive some heavy pressure but almost snatched a shock winner. Holder made a 30 yard run to put Metcalf away but the striker was too slow and Finch cleared the danger. Lee then burst through but Finch narrowed the angle and dived to save his shot.
