The Rebels gained a valuable point on Monday when they drew 1-1 with 3rd placed Leatherhead in an entertaining match at Fetcham Grove.
The Slough side started with a few surprises as manager Joe Arpino dropped Phil Beal, for John Bayer, who has been out for three months with a torn ligament. Peter Feely was back in the side, but Barrie Friend was on the substitutes bench for the start of the match.
Both teams started casually with Leatherhead making most of the pressure, even so, there was no real determination in their attacks, and Trevor Porter had only one save to make when Micky Doyle forced a full length save after making a break on the left.
Slough substituted Friend for the limping Russell after half an hour, and immediately things began to look up for the Rebels. Slough were unlucky not to take the lead when Peter Feely, who had a fine match, volleyed a Friend cross against the upright with the 'keeper beaten.
But one minute later it was the Tanners turn to nearly score when Tim Turl mis-headed a cross from Ray Eaton, and Alan Gane had to clear the ball off the line.
The second half saw Slough throw everything into the attack, and two minutes into the half they took the lead. Turl put a long ball into the area, and Feely beat Malley in the air to touch the ball on for Friend who slammed the ball into the net.
This goal stunned Leatherhead into attack, and they always looked as if they could pull back the goal deficit. After 59 minutes John Baker pounced on a faulty clearance by Gane, but hit the post.
And in the 78th minute, Roger Mackay was booked after he had brought down John Doyle, with the Leatherhead forward clear with only Porter to beat. Therefore, when Leatherhead equalised after 87 minutes it was no real surprise. Ray Eaton pumped a ball into the middle, and John Baker headed into the path of Billy Salkeld who blasted the ball off the post into the net.
