Slough put up a great fight at The Stadium against Enfield on Tuesday evening and although in the end they had to admit defeat by two clear goals they gave the title chasers a good run for their money.
It was Enfield's 29th game without defeat and they were quick to show their outstanding football qualities in all departments of the game.
Enfield went straight into attack and inside five minutes they had broken through the Slough defence and were a goal up. Tony Bass, long a thorn in Slough's side, remember the Amateur Cup games with Dagenham, nipped in front of Somers to head a copybook goal from a Glover cross.
After this, all the pressure came from Enfield, with both Searle and Bass wasting good chances. At this stage the visitors looked shaky in defence and too many loose passes put Enfield on the attack, but even Slough should have put one away when Paul Lee screwed Russell's cross narrowly over the bar.
The best chance of half came to Enfield, when Bishop's 30-yard PowerDrive was parried onto the bar by Porter with Bass missing the loose ball.
After the break Slough transformed their game and put much more pressure on Enfield, after only 30 seconds a brilliant move put Lee on his own with the ball, but his shot was equally as well saved by Moore in the Enfield goal.
Slough then relaxed for a five-minute spell, and it was this mistake that allowed Enfield in for their second. Wright's corner was headed in by Bass who towered over Somers to score.
Being two goals up, Enfield were happy to allow Slough more room, but although many attacks were launched, the finishing power was never quite there.
On reflection, Slough met a very good side in Enfield and played well to pressurise the home team to the extent that they did, too, many teams when playing 2-0 down would have been satisfied to defend, and this should be put in Slough's favour.
As Slough boss, Joe Arpino said after the match: "We've come here twice before and we drew and won, but as far as I'm concerned we played better today than on both those occasions."
