League
Slough continued their great revival in the Isthmian League with a fine win at Claremont Road, over their old rivals Hendon, on Saturday. This was Rebels fourth win in five games and the club are now climbing rapidly to a more than respectable position in the table.
With an unchanged side from that which won at Boreham Wood during the week, Slough served up constructive and intelligent football from the outset.
The high wind sweeping across the ground made things difficult and defenders alike, consequently despite defensive errors the goal scoring chances were few and far between.
Ian Cooke shot over from a few yards and Lee blasted wide when well placed, these efforts showed Slough to advantage while at the other end a shot by Jefferies was charged down.
When the goal came it was almost out of nothing. Paul Lee, collected a good through ball and darting between the defenders chipped the ball over the clutching fingers of goalkeeper Steel as he advanced from his line.
Hendon were very lively after this and shortly before the break Haider collected a long throw-in and volleyed the ball goalwards but Porter made a brilliant save.
In the second half Hendon threatened a lot of danger but Slough soaked up the pressure and when they did make the break they gave Steel plenty to do.
One move split the Hendon defence and a joint effort involving Lee, Peter Feeley and Dave Russell, ended with Russell skimming the crossbar.
Hendon made an all-out attacking movement in the last minutes and from a free-kick the ball was driven against a goalpost with Porter beaten. A thoroughly good all-round performance by Slough and their first ever league victory at Hendon which was given a great ovation by the large crowd of supporters they had to urge them on.
