A penalty miss by Alan Gane robbed Slough Town of a draw after they had soaked up everything Staines could throw at them and were taking the upper hand for the first time in Tuesday's thrill-a-minute Isthmian League game.
Gane made the fatal mistake of putting the ball to the left of former Slough keeper Dave Collyer - apparently forgetting that Collyer knew this was the side Gane always favoured.
Slough manager Joe Arpino was obviously annoyed at seeing his side suffer their seventh defeat in 11 league games, with two of the defeats being inflicted by Staines. He commented: "Staines burnt themselves out and we controlled the second-half, but we didn't take our chances and gave away too much at the back."
Right-back Bobby Horastead's lack of pace was often exposed and his distribution, like that of Turl's, was poor. But what was even more disturbing was that neither Peter Beasant nor Peter Osbourne were picked up when they scored - on two other occasions.
Rowlands carved out a great chance for Beasant in the eighth minute, only to see his colleague hesitate, and keeper Porter - back in place of Scott in an otherwise unchanged side - bravely dived to take the ball off his feet.
Beasant made amends one minute later, however. Following a break by Shaw, the Slough defence allowed Beasant enough time to send a 25 yard shot into the top of the net.
Staines striker Osbourne squandered an even better chance by firing against the bar from 15 yards.
Lee, despite a back injury which necessitated him seeing a specialist before the match, kept battling away against the tough tackling Shaw and was eventually rewarded. Lee turned sharply to cross from the right in the last minute of the first-half and Russell thumped the ball firmly into the net for the equaliser.
Slough came more into the game after the interval and Reardon brought a diving save from Collyer. They then had a penalty appeal turned down when Lee’s centre struck Williams on the arm.
But Staines, who brought on substitute Reagan for the injured Beasant in the 66th minute, regained the lead two minutes later. O'Sullivan's long ball from the right caught out the Slough defence and Osbourne dived to head home.
Slough stormed back and after White had had a header cleared off the line, they were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute for a foul by Williams on Lee. But Collyer got down to push out Gane's spot kick and Gane slammed the rebound over.
