Yet another defeat was Slough Town's reward on Monday evening when they visited Croydon in an Isthmian League match and they now languish near the bottom of the table without a win to their credit.
To add to their troubles Slough lost John Beyer with a leg injury twenty minutes from the end and this may give manager Joe Arpino another difficult problem. In a desperate effort to put some backbone into their shaky defence, Slough brought in Barry Mason and shifted Turl into the rearguard, but as far as Mason was concerned this was not a success, the newcomer having the misfortune to put through his own goal after 25 minutes and he was taken off at half-time.
Croydon did not win their first league match until last Saturday so they must have been well pleased with this performance. Croydon started very strongly and could well have had several goals in the first thirty minutes but all they got was the one Mason gave them. The centre half was trying to head the ball clear but unfortunately all he succeeded in doing was to steer it out of Porter's reach into the net.
Croydon, encouraged by this gift goal, pushed forward and went further ahead when Jackson, unmarked, headed past Porter from ten yards out. Slough had their moments with Lee, Russell and Somers all testing the Croydon keeper, but the Rebels defence just could not cope and at half time Clift was brought on for Mason and Reardon switched to the centre to help Beyer, and this certainly brought a big improvement.
Then came the injury to Beyer and Slough, down to ten men, were fighting a lost cause for Somers had to drop back leaving only Russell and Lee up front. In the last six games Slough have conceded 14 goals.
