Isthmian Lge Sub. Cup
A goal two minutes from the end of extra time by Slough Town substitute Steve Hill sent Wycombe Wanderers crashing out of the Rothmans Isthmian League Subsidiary Cup in Monday night's semi-final at Loakes Park.
So bogey side Slough have now completed a remarkable succession of victories over their local rivals this season. They beat Wanderers twice in the league and knocked them out of the F.A. Trophy. In short they have wrecked Wycombe's chance of winning a single domestic title.
Wycombe enjoyed at least 75 per cent of the territorial advantage in this game and must blame their lack of accuracy in the penalty area for not creating more clear cut chances. They had numerous half-chances, but with Tony Horseman injured they had nobody to put them away.
The visitors opened the scoring after 25 minutes thanks to a moment of hesitancy in the Wycombe defence. Roy Davies's free-kick into the goalmouth was not properly controlled by striker Paul Lee and ran across the face of the goal. Lee had time to regain the ball and fire into the roof of the net as he turned.
It was difficult to see where Wycombe's equaliser was going to come from, so ineffective had the forwards been. But Howard Kennedy provided the answer in the 39th minute.
Just before the goal Kennedy fired a low 20-yard shot which Paul Barron, who enjoyed a fine game, did well to save. So when a free-kick was awarded just outside the penalty area in front of the goal, it was natural that Kennedy should take it.
He did not disappoint the home fans, striking a thunderbolt into the back of the net. Barron may have been put off by a deflection.
Slough’s main attacks came on the quick breakaways and only some alert goalkeeping by Maskell prevented them going ahead before half-time. Maskell rushed out of his area to clear the danger as Lee broke through and then raced back to his line to turn, Gordon Bartlett's shot round the post for a corner.
So the match went into extra time and the longer the game went on the more certain it seemed that Wycombe would win. They forced eight corners without reply in the additional period alone.
But remarkably it was Slough who scored the winner in the 118th minute. Hill, who had come on only eight minutes earlier, won possession with ease from John Delaney in the penalty area and slipped the ball neatly just inside the right hand post.
