Slough achieved their second away three goal bonus of the season, three points, at the expense of Tommy Tranter's new club, to the great satisfaction of the Town players and supporters, and as a result strengthened Joe Arpino's claim to take over the management of the Rebels in succession to Roy Sleap.
Woking, have shown greatly improved form since Tranter joined them but they were not in the hunt on Saturday, the Rebels knew all the answers.
Mr. Arpino has an inclination towards attacking football. The Slough side that he is fielding at the present moment shows an ability to improvise exciting moves, and this was sufficient to throw Woking completely out of gear in this encounter.
The wind returned as usual on Saturday and Slough kicked off with a stiff breeze behind them. This was a considerable advantage and the visitors were able to take on the Woking defence at will with all the forwards interchanging beautifully and with the mid-field backing up well the home team found their backs to the wall.
It took Slough twenty-four minutes of almost continued pressure, however, to make the vital breakthrough when a fine corner by Roy Davies from the left was neatly headed home by Brown.
Within another minute Slough scored again when Terry Brown fell inside the area, and was adjudged to have been fouled. This appeared to be a harsh decision by referee Cullen but the Woking players raised no serious objections and Roy Davies from the spot placed the ball perfectly to the right of Clive Norman to put Slough two goals ahead.
Woking defended stoutly without conceding any further goals and left the Slough supporters wondering whether two goals would by enough with the wind to contend with in the second half.
Straight from the re-start their fears were almost realised when Malley, confused by the flight of the ball, headed it straight into the path of Steve Cosham, but Barron was able to divert his shot for a corner.
Woking were now able to create their own patterns, but the Slough defence were just that little bit sharper and were able to force the home forwards out of the area. Barron was called upon to be alert and he made a fine diving save from Tony Roberts.
As the game progressed the Slough forwards began to find some unexpected gaps as the Woking defence pushed up. Gordon Bartlett made two particularly fine defence splitting passes that 70th minute the Rebels were led to nothing, however in the awarded a free kick that Paul Lee met slightly too early and he headed just wide with Norman stranded.
Five minutes later Lee again broke through on his own but slipped the ball just wide of the right hand post. Woking came back and Barron made an incredible save from Cosham as the ball was hit with tremendous power for the top corner of the net.
Another pass from Bartlett then set Lee off on a mazy run which took him past the Woking keeper to the bye-line, squaring the ball back to the approaching forwards he was surprised to see the wind take the ball behind them, and Bartlett moving in on the loose ball was up-ended in the area.
Lee was not to be denied and six minutes from time Roy Davies, moving quickly onto a loose ball just outside the area, slipped the ball across for him to place into the empty net.
On this form the current team is capable of scaling considerable heights. It is rather a pity that it has been left until now to find the best combination to achieve this type of success, but now one can only hope that many of the team now playing together will be in a position to carry on the good work next season.
