Slough were back to form on Tuesday evening when they well and truly defeated Leatherhead by two clear goals in a Rothmans' Isthmian League game. Slough relied on the team which lost to Hendon while Leatherhead played seven of the team which made FA Cup history last season.
Both the goals came in the second half with, as usual, one in the dying minutes of the game.
The opening exchanges were very even with both goalkeepers in turn being brought into action. Swannell, the England keeper made one outstanding save from a shot blasted in by Horastead and then Chris Kelly, who shook so many English League team goalkeepers in the club's FA Cup run brought the best out of Barron with a real pile driver.
It was good football from both teams, Leatherhead were unlucky when Malley saved a certain goal with a desperate off the goal-line kick.
In the second half Slough settled down and speeded up their attacks but suffered a setback when Underwood had to retire with a foot injury sustained before the break. Jim Smith, came on as replacement.
The mid-way point of the half was reached before Slough achieved the break-through for which they had been probing. Beyer took a long free-kick and Brown headed a fine goal.
After this the Town increased the pressure and only Swannell's brilliance kept the score down. In the last five minutes the visitors cross-bar was rattled and then a well-placed free-kick from Davies was turned into the net by Bartlett.
Praise for the referee Mr. Robinson, the referee from Feltham, contributed to the entertainment value of the match by very efficient refereeing without over-working his whistle.
